Elizabeth Horton Sheff Awarded Honorary Degree from University of Hartford
Elizabeth Horton Sheff will be awarded with an honorary degree by the University of Hartford.
“Education activist Elizabeth Horton Sheff will receive an honorary degree and be the featured speaker at this year’s Fall Commencement. Sheff is best known for her landmark civil rights lawsuit known as Sheff vs. O’Neill, which challenged inequities in the quality of education provided in Hartford public schools compared to the surrounding suburbs. The lawsuit begun to address the inequities through new magnet schools and other education reforms. As a community organizer and former Hartford city council member, she has championed many other causes, including fighting for people in public housing, championing civic involvement and literacy, and founding a program to support grandparents raising their grandchildren.”
