Capital Prep Hosts Student Visitors from Brooklyn, NY for Learning Exchange
On Wednesday, January 18th, students from Park Slope Collegiate school in Brooklyn, NY visited Hartford’s Capital Preparatory Magnet School for a learning exchange, facilitated by the Sheff Movement.
During a full day of tours, presentations and class visits, students had the opportunity to discuss concepts central to their school’s individual themes. Park Slope Collegiate discussed its anti-racism efforts, a commitment which the school has developed in response to its changing demographics over the past several years, access to sports teams at school, the presence of metals detectors, and more. Capital Prep students described how their social justice theme operates, their school’s two-sport requirement, its year-round schedule, school uniforms, and collaborations with higher education institutions.
After an initial hour-long exchange, visiting students shadowed Capital Prep students in the afternoon, before coming together a last time to reflect on their day.
“In an era when we have to fight to make equity and integration in schools a public concern, we were grateful to spend the day with another school community grappling with these very important issues,” said Park Slope principal Jill Bloomberg. “We all felt the camaraderie that springs from a shared interest in anti-racism and social justice and appreciated comparing experiences of learning through both study and activism. We look forward to hosting Capital Prep in Brooklyn soon!”
The group also took some time to record a thoughtful and moving episode of Capital Prep’s “Trailblaze Podcast” featuring interviews with Bloomberg, Park Slope Collegiate students and Capital Prep students, available by clicking here!
