“Sheff Today” Youth Video Contest

The Sheff Movement is working on a collaboration that will make the “Sheff Today” Youth Video Contest bigger and even better. Please check back later for more information and a revised submission date. We are looking forward to viewing your entry. 

Students—make a video on how you see the Sheff struggle for equal educational opportunity today. Tell us a story—in five minutes or less—about how the civil rights movement for quality integrated schools has affected you, or your family, friends, community in the city or suburban region of Hartford, Connecticut. Learn more about the Sheff Movement for school integration and see resources below on how to create your own video.

First prize: $250 (contact us to help increase this amount)

Deadline: Please check back soon for an updated deadline

Eligibility: Must be 18 years or younger, and resident of city or suburban Hartford area

Guidelines: Be creative and tell us a story from your point of view. We recommend shooting your own video footage, which can be done with an inexpensive camera or phone. If you add video or sound from other sources, be sure to credit them. Ask people for permission before filming them. You are responsible for the content of your video.

To submit your entry: First, please let us know that you are planning to enter the Sheff Today Youth Video Contest by filling out this form. Once you’ve finished your video, upload it to a free web hosting service (such as YouTube.com or Vimeo.com) and complete our submission form, which requires an on-screen signature from you and your parent/guardian.

Judges: Entries will be evaluated by Pedro Bermudez (one of the 1989 Sheff plaintiffs, an award-winning filmmaker, and communications coordinator at Real Art Ways), TJ Noel-Sullivan (filmmaker and Classical Magnet School, Class of 2016) and others TBA

Ideas:

  • Tell us about your school, and if or how it brings together students of different races.
  • What’s it like to attend an interdistrict magnet school? Or an Open Choice school?
  • What about students who do not attend an integrated school? What’s their story?
  • Do all students have an equal opportunity to attend a quality integrated school?
  • What do young people know — or not know — about Sheff today? Find out.
  • Does your current school have an historical connection to the Sheff case? Tell us.
  • Interview a parent, teacher, student, or activist who is improving education for all.
